School for Girls - English
S. B. Messines’ first public school, and in the creation of which Remexido had a hand, was founded thanks to Ordinance on 21st April 1821. It was for boys only, which was the normal educational situation then. It was not until over half a century later that an equivalent school for girls was opened, the choice of the location of the building in which it would be housed becoming the subject of much controversy at the time. The final choice was to construct a building from scratch in the Churchyard. The area intended for the school and its yard had been used as a graveyard throughout the centuries and continuously between 1834 and 1837. In 1837, a small fortified building had been constructed on the site which served to house the soldiers that would protect the village from Remexido’s guerrilla attacks. The school building was subsequently constructed between 1877 and 1882, and included accommodation to house the teacher. Inaugurated by Decree on 27th January 1876, the Girls’ School was finally opened in 1882.
When the Republic was proclaimed, the building became co-occupied by a number of public offices such as the Parish, Civilian Registry and Mayorship. These were located on the building’s ground floor, while the school continued to function on the upper floor.
The building closed as a school following the construction and opening of a new school building in 1961.
