Capela de São Sebastião - Português

A edificação de capelas sobre esta invocação encontra-se relacionada com as grandes epidemias do século XV e XVI. Acreditava-se que detinham as pestes, pelo que eram erguidas em zonas periféricas dos aglomerados urbanos. Ainda hoje é designada por ermida.

Contemporânea da igreja matriz ou construída poucos anos depois. Exibe pórtico em grés de Silves com arestas boleadas, indício de que pode ser obra ainda do século XVI.

Apresenta fachada simples, porta de verga reta e cornija sóbria, coroada com frontão quebrado de formulário barroco. De nave única, ostenta na capela-mor um retábulo rococó.

Em 1872 encontrava-se em ruína eminente, sendo alvo de uma renovação integral. Mais recentemente foi intervencionada entre 1998 e 1999.

Serve há vários anos como capela mortuária.

Saint Sebastian’s Chapel - English

The building of chapels with this name came about with the great epidemics of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. People believed that these chapels had the power to halt the spread of plagues and epidemics and they were routinely constructed on the outskirts of urban agglomerates. To this day the chapel is designated as a hermitage. The construction of the chapel was contemporaneous with the building of the main church or possibly built very soon thereafter.

Built with a sandstone porch, and sporting rounded edges this is an architectural indication that it was probably constructed during the sixteenth century. It presents a simple front, a straight lintel door and shading cornice crowned with a broken pediment of baroque style. Inside, the chapel consists of a single central room, the main chapel, housing a Rococo altarpiece.

By 1872 the chapel, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, was the subject of some renovation and rebuilding. More recently, between 1998 and 1999, further repairs and renovations were carried out.

For many years it has served as a mortuary chapel.
