Birthplace of João de Deus - English
Monument of Municipal Interest (2010)
Son of Pedro José Ramos and Isabel Gertrudes Martins, João de Deus was born on 8th March 1830, passing away in Lisbon on 11th January 1896. Considered the most important poet of his time, he was also author of the famous “Cartilha Maternal”, a work which was instrumental in the teaching of several generations of Portuguese how to read.
In acknowledgement of his work, a national service of remembrance was held on the day of his 65th birthday. This ceremony was repeated following his death when he was buried in the National Pantheon. In 1908, the question of the actual house in which he was born became a matter of controversy. Two buildings were thought to be possible; one located in Rua da Estalagem, the other adjacent to the churchyard. All the historical evidence however points to the pedagogue being born in the Rua da Estalagem house. That building was sold by his parents in 1841 when they moved to the churchyard building, and where the family lived thereafter.
A single-storey dwelling typical of national architecture, in 1841 it consisted of five buildings and a yard. In the 1960s, (the decade when the present yard was built and two of the memorial plaques erected) the Parish made unsuccessful efforts to acquire it for the purposes of creating a library; only recently was it possible for the Câmara de Silves formally to acquire it.
